Hints and Tips for going to Cons
Hey everyone! It’s Ben with SETGO again and it’s been a wild year so far. It’s absolutely crazy to me that we’re already in May! I’ve been extremely fortunate that I’ve been able to attend four conventions already, with so many more on the books for later in the year.
Conventions are one of my favorite things in this hobby. I love meeting new people, reconnecting with old friends, seeing new games and products, running events, and just witnessing the sheer spectacle of the whole ordeal. It really is the best time for me and I try to be a part of as many as I can in an official capacity or just as an attendee.
Over the years, I’ve gotten a LOT better at packing for these events and understanding certain situations that I’ll almost definitely have to deal with. That said, I’ve realized that there are a number of items that always come with me so I thought I’d share some of my tips and items that will always be coming with me on my trip. I doubt any of these will greatly surprise you, but it’s worth going through the list just to help give you new ideas.
Tips & Tricks!
- Proper clothing
Different locations and seasons will dictate clothing choices, but do not rush through this process or make too many assumptions! Do a little research and pre-planning to determine what your needs will actually be. Weather can change quickly, and if you’re unfamiliar with an out of town location, you can get caught without the right gear.
Some token rain gear is always a good idea, especially if you know you’re going to be walking from your hotel or out to explore. I always have a rainproof pullover with a hood in my backpack that rolls up small.
Also remember, places can still get cold in the summer, or hot in the winter. So have some layers ready. I always keep a hoody in my kit no matter what!

Since these are gaming conventions, we are also bringing along our armies/models for whatever games we’re playing. This is on top of whatever we need for clothing and such and can be a logistical challenge (especially if you’re flying). Extra thought will need to go towards the safe transport of your models, and may even require an additional investment in special transport cases to ensure a safe trip for your priceless models. Lastly, have some forethought on what you are going to be bringing BACK with you. Conventions often have vendors and you ARE going to want things. We always try to look at the vendors ahead of time to get a plan for what we’re likely to buy, but there are almost always things that just pop up. Flea markets at these things can be AWESOME, but can be a major headache when trying to plan for the return trip. When we’re remote and having to fly back, we make sure we have extra space in our checked bags. Another trick is to locate a nearby Fedex or UPS store and simply box everything up and ship it back. Make sure to insure it if you do!
3. Read the events listing
There are tons of events going on at most gaming conventions. Some if it is not going to interest you at all, but much of it likely will. Do a good read through of the events listing to figure out what you might want to see, when it’s going on, and where in the venue it’ll be held. The layout at literally EVERY con I’ve gone to is a bit confusing so be prepared.
Do yourself a favor and make it a point to go explore things you’ve not experienced before. You may find your new favorite game.
4. Look outside the venue!
You’re going to be excited for the con, no doubt about it. It’s the main reason you’re going, right? But seriously, take a bit to boot up Google maps and take a look around your hotel and the convention venue to find interesting sidequests and, more importantly, food! Group dinners are a BIG deal for our group so we always try to find some interesting local restaurants. Also, venue food is a 50/50 on being good but is ALWAYS overpriced.
Don’t forget to look at the cons official website too. They will often have a list of local attractions (sometimes even having discounts to go along with it!).
5. Items in my kit:

- Backpack: Needs to be durable and have distinguishable markings. Pick up some patches or pins to adorn it. How many pieces of flare do YOU have?
- Water bottle: Again, needs to be marked for easy identification. Great for the con and the trip getting there.
- Snacks: Having some salty and sweet options while you’re playing or walking around the con is a great way to keep energy levels high without having to resort to overpriced stuff at the venue.
- Flavored drink bottle: I’m talking about the little bottles you squirt into your water. Like MIO or Crystal lite. Takes up no space in your bag and its super nice to have options other than just water. Staying hydrated is incredibly important.
- Emergen C: Con crud is a thing. B
- Aspirin: You don’t realize how loud it is in these places, and you’ll be on your feet all day, often leaning over tables playing games. A little pain relief goes a long way.
- Antacids: My diet does not exist when i’m at cons and I like to treat myself. Nuff said.
- Battery packs and an extra multi-charger: Plugs may be limited or far away from where you’re gaming. I, for one, reference gaming materials ALOT from my phone.
- Cough drops: You’ll be talking A LOT in a loud space. It takes no time to lose your voice or get a sore throat. These are life savers.
- Travel pillow: I hate most hotel pillows, so I have a memory foam travel pillow that has absolutely saved my life.
- Travel Fan: I sleep HOT, and not all hotel rooms do a great job at temperature control. Another life saver.
- Ear plugs: Either for when you need a break from the din of voices around you while walking around, or if you’re sharing a hotel room with a lumber mill, these are always worth having.
- Cash & digital currency: Flea markets/private sales are common at these things, so being prepared will help you score some awesome loot.
- Some extra gaming supplies: Some RPG dice, A Magic deck, or your tablet can help ensure that impromptu gaming opportunities aren’t missed.
