Tours of Duty: Why Star Wars Legion Finally Scratches Every Itch
I jumped into Star Wars Legion over COVID, at a time when a lot of us were looking for something to hold onto. I still remember picking up Iden Versio right before everything completely shut down. The timing was grim, but that little box of plastic troopers turned out to be the start of a long term obsession. I have been hooked on Legion ever since.
Through South-Eastern Tabletop Gaming Organization (SETGO), I have been incredibly fortunate to help run two large Legion events, the Richmond Open and the NOVA Open, and I will be doing it again this year. Competitive Legion is fantastic. The community is strong, the game is tight, and the tables always look incredible.
But as much as I love tournaments, I also love roleplaying, narrative campaigns, and long form character growth.
That is where Tours of Duty comes in.
What Tours of Duty Actually Is!
Tours of Duty takes Legion and layers a persistent RPG style campaign system on top of it.
Instead of only fielding named heroes or faceless corps, you create your own character, usually starting from a generic unit or a lightly customized model. That character fights alongside your army from game to game, earning experience, gaining abilities, suffering injuries, picking up quirks, and slowly becoming your character rather than just another trooper on the table.
You are not just playing matches. You are telling a story.
Victories and losses matter. Characters grow over time. Loadouts evolve. Personal rivalries form. Even failure pushes the narrative forward instead of just ending your day at an early exit.
Losing Every Game and Loving It
I have been in a Tours of Duty campaign for a little over a month now, and here is the honest truth.
I have lost every single match.
And I am having an absolute blast.
Even in defeat, my characters advance. They gain experience. They develop reputations. They survive, adapt, and carry the scars of battle into the next engagement. Every game adds to their story and, of course, brings glory to the Empire.
Tours of Duty turns Legion from a series of isolated engagements into a living campaign where what happens next actually matters.
What is Coming Next?
We are taking this concept to the next level with a massive Mos SETGO battle at the Williamsburg Muster. Big table. Big narrative. Big consequences. The kind of game where you do not just remember who won. You remember who survived.
If you love Star Wars.
If you love Legion.
If you love campaigns, characters, and stories that grow over time.
Tours of Duty is worth your time.
And I, for one, cannot wait to deploy again.

“I thought Legion looked so dumb when I first saw it on Guerilla Miniatures Games, but it turned out to be the best tabletop wargame I’ve ever played!”
